The UPLB University Library conducted a strategic planning workshop with the theme “GEAR UP: Getting equipped toward excellent, adaptable, and resilient UPLB Libraries through public service and research” on Jan 23-24 at the Nawawalang Paraiso Resort in Tayabas, Quezon.

Personnel of the university libraries includes those at the main library, or officially the University Library, and those stationed at the satellite libraries or the libraries and reading rooms in the colleges and institutes.

Dr. Jean O. Loyola, vice chancellor for academic affairs, graced the event and gave an inspiring message, commending the University Library for its work, initiatives, and programs. According to Dr. Loyola, it is imperative to conduct a periodic review of how things are being done. She also discussed the importance of support in achieving people excellence and the critical areas of improvement that can contribute to this achievement.

The workshop aimed to update the vision and mission of the University Library and satellite libraries; identify and specify goals, measurable objectives, and activities that will guide the university libraries in the decision-making and ensure that everyone will work toward a common goal; and identify and create the most critical services and programs that support academic and research need that can best serve the UPLB community.

University Library Executive Committee members were divided into four groups. Each group focused on crafting plans and programs based on the seven strategic areas: customer and information services, information resources and collection, ICT and equitable access, learning and working environment, partnerships, linkages, and networks, and quality assurance and accreditation.

During the workshop, the participants brainstormed ideas; discussed plans and directives; re-examined past accomplishments and activities; and reviewed the results of the student’s feedback survey and SOAR (Strength, Opportunity, Aspiration, and Result ) survey from the library staff.

Finally, the group drafted a relevant and “breathable” document based on collective decision-making to ensure that the library’s plans, services, and programs are geared toward future-proof UPLB.

The workshop was facilitated by Vanessa Ebron San Juan, university extension specialist at the Office of the Chancellor. (Meichelle Ann Jenine R. Galapon)
